AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy® Program

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy® Program

Socialization – Training – Activity – Responsibility

Wednesdays 6:30-7:25
9 Sept – 28 Nov (No classes on 31 Oct or 21 Nov)

This 9-week long course will be held at the CTA Beltsville Facility and will conclude on 28 Nov with the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy® Program test.  Puppies 2 months up to 5 months of age, regardless of heritage (known or unknown) are welcome to participate. An AKC or PAL number will be needed for the certification paperwork at the conclusion of the course.  Please note:  the AKC mandates that puppies which are aggressive with people or other puppies, are not eligible to enroll in STAR classes.

Class size will be limited to 10 puppies.   Registration deadline is Wednesday, 12 September  and may be completed online or by mail.  Puppies younger than 4 months may begin classes prior to having their first rabies shots (MD and PG County require dogs be vaccinated by 4 months of age).  However, they must be current on their other puppy shots and receive the rabies vaccination if they turn 4 mos of age during the class.

19 Sept is ORIENTATION for people only;  please… do not bring puppies that evening!  Other 2-footed family members are encouraged to attend that night and to also observe classes.  DO BRING (1) your pup’s shot records (2) your pup’s leash (preferably leather or cotton webbing) and (3) microchip information on 13 June.

IMPORTANT:  In order to test for AKC STAR Puppy qualification at the last class, the handler & pup MUST attend 6 of the classes offered. If conflict dates are determined ahead of time, all effort will be made to schedule make-up sessions during the course. Should anything (i.e. severe weather; power outage) prevent a class from taking place, up to two additional class date(s) will be added in December.

For more detailed information on the AKC S.T.A.R Puppy® Program goals please log onto: http://www.akc.org/dog-owners/training/akc-star-puppy/ Homework assignments are given and handlers are expected to set aside short practice sessions every day in order for their puppies to progress.  Class time is for training the exercises to be practiced at home.
