AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy® Program

Socialization ♦ Training ♦ Activity ♦ Responsibility

Wednesdays 6:30-7:15    April 04 through 30 May

This nine-week long course will be held at the Beltsville Facility and will conclude on 30 May with the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test.  Puppies 2 to 6 months of age, regardless of heritage (known or unknown) are welcome to participate.  Puppies over six months and less than 12 months may register only with advance approval by the instructor, Susan von Suhrke.

Class size will be limited to 10 puppies.  The $100 fee includes the testing fee for the last class; Registration deadline is Wednesday, 28 March and may be done online or by mailing a check.

Puppies younger than 4 months may begin classes prior to having their first rabies shots (MD requires it by 4 months of age).  However, they must be current on their other puppy shots.

The first class on April 4th is for people only; please do not bring puppies that evening. Other two-footed family members are encouraged to attend that night and to observe subsequent classes.  DO BRING (1) your pup’s shot records and (2) your pup’s leash that evening.

Should anything (i.e. severe weather) prevent a class from taking place, the course will be extended to include the missed class(es).

PLEASE NOTE:  In order to qualify to take the test for AKC STAR Puppy certification at the last class, the handler & pup MUST attend at least six of the eight training classes offered.

Classes 2-8 will focus on basic training techniques using positive reinforcement, building confidence and socialization skills as well as expanding puppies’ experiences with a variety of exercises and situations.  The S.T.A.R.  puppy test will comprise Class #9. More detailed information on the AKC S.T.A.R Puppy® Program goals may be found on the www.AKC.org  website;  http://www.akc.org/dog-owners/training/akc-star-puppy/
